Membership
The Barnet Society is an association of residents united by an interest in our town, our history, our open spaces, our buildings and facilities and our local culture.
Membership is for all local residents who care about the area in which we live. By acting together we can preserve the best of what we have and influence the changes that occur in the life of our vibrant community.
Our constitution requires us to:
- protect the surrounding Green Belt
- foster a lively interest in the town
- call attention and reflect public opinion to new developments
- initiate our own proposals for the enhancement of our local environment and amenities
- encourage local cultural interests
- The degree to which you involve yourself is entirely up to you - as much or as little as you like, it’s your choice.
Members receive 3 Newsletters and an Annual Report each year and have access to the programme of meetings, talks, walks and other events.
If you have time, there are many ways you can help. If not, just come along to our events, read our Newsletters or just enjoy finding out more about the fascinating area you live in.

High Barnet is a great place to live – open spaces, friendly village atmosphere, prestigious schools and historic public houses.
The Barnet Society, the voice for High Barnet and surrounds, is committed to keeping Barnet a welcoming and thriving locality whilst encouraging positive developments.
Our website is a high-quality source of news and information about life in our locality and the Society’s work in campaigning for a better Barnet, from Arkley and Hadley to New Barnet and Oakleigh Park.
It provides a vital online platform for discussion and debate about issues that are topical, perhaps troubling, and where the Society’s diligence and expertise might make all the difference.
Our four Newsletters a year are much appreciated for the range of their coverage and in-depth analysis of our dedicated work to protect and preserve our Green Belt; improve our town centres; and raise design standards in new housing and public and commercial buildings.
The Society’s work is all the more important given the demise of our local newspapers, the lack of original reporting and the challenges residents face in attempting to hold to account our local authorities and public institutions.
In recent months the Society has been analysing Transport for London’s plans to build up to 450 homes on land around the High Barnet underground station; we spent many weeks marshalling our case for objecting to the application to build 150 homes in the fields and woods of the Whalebones estate in breach of Conservation Area policy; and our volunteers succeeded in identifying 45 buildings in Chipping Barnet that have been added to Barnet Council’s Local List of buildings of historic or architectural interest.
When objections need to be mobilised and registered, we can assist in formulating a response, and in our experience, residents appreciate our advice.

The minimum annual subscriptions are £10.00 for an individual or £15.00 for a family membership. However, a larger annual donation is much appreciated and will help us to continue funding our newsletter, website and campaigning work.
